چکیده

The improvements of automatic face recognition during the last 2 decades have disclosed new applications like border control and camera surveillance. A new application field is forensic face recognition. Traditionally, face recognition by human experts has been used in forensics, but now there is a quickly developing interest in automatic face recognition as well. At the same time there is a trend towards a more objective and quantitative approach for traditional manual face comparison by human experts. Unlike in most applications of face recognition, in the forensic domain a binary decision or a score does not suffice as a result to be used in court. Rather, in the forensic domain, the outcome of the recognition process should be in the form of evidence or support for a prosecution hypothesis verses a defence hypothesis. In addition, in the forensic domain, trace images are often of poor quality. The available literature on (automatic) forensic face recognition is still very limited. In this survey, an overview is given of the characteristics of forensic face recognition and the main publications. The survey introduces forensic E-mail address: [email protected] E-mail address: [email protected] E-mail address: [email protected] 2 Tauseef Ali, Luuk Spreeuwers and Raymond Veldhuis face recognition and reports on attempts to use automatic face recognition in the forensic context. Forensic facial comparison by human experts and the development of guidelines and a more quantitative and objective approach are also addressed. Probably the most important topic of the survey is the development of a framework to use automatic face recognition in the forensic setting. The Bayesian framework is a logical choice and likelihood ratios can in principle be used directly in court. In the statistical evaluation of the trace image, the choice of databases of facial images plays a very important role.

Forensic Face Sketch Recognition Using Computer Vision

Now-a-days need for technologies for identification, detection and recognition of suspects has increased. One of the most common biometric techniques is face recognition, since face is the convenient way used by the people to identify each-other. Understanding how humans recognize face sketches drawn by artists is of significant value to both criminal investigators and forensic researchers in C...

Non-frontal Model Based Approach to Forensic Face Recognition

Face recognition is a difficult problem and it becomes even more challenging for non-frontal view images (captured by a CCTV camera) commonly encountered in a forensic face recognition case. In a typical forensic case, the surveillance view test image (also called the trace) is captured by a CCTV camera and the reference set consists of frontal view mug shot image of the suspects. Comparison of...

A Framework for Forensic Face Recognition based on Recognition Performance Calibrated for the Quality of Image Pairs

Recently, it has been shown that performance of a face recognition system depends on the quality of both face images participating in the recognition process: the reference and the test image. In the context of forensic face recognition, this observation has two implications: a) the quality of the trace (extracted from CCTV footage) constrains the performance achievable using a particular face ...

On Forensic Use of Biometrics, with Face and Ear Recognition

This chapter examines the use of biometrics techniques within forensic science. It discusses the historic connections between the subjects and then examines face and ear biometrics in detail. The detailed examination starts from one of the most common and familiar biometric features face and then introduces a new biometric feature ear into forensics. Face is the natural means for human beings t...

Bridging biometrics and forensics

This paper is a survey on biometrics and forensics, especially on the techniques and applications of face recognition in forensics. This paper describes the differences and connections between biometrics and forensics, and bridges each other by formulating the conditions when biometrics can be applied in forensics. Under these conditions, face recognition, as a non-intrusive and non-contact bio...
